Disruptive behaviour disorders, such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), are associated with significant impairments, as well as a considerable societal and economic burden. Parent Management Training (PMT) and Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) are established treatments for ODD, yet their effectiveness leaves room for improvement. This thesis explores potential predictors, moderators, and mediators that may enhance treatment outcomes for youth with ODD. Study 1 is a systematic review examining parental and familial factors influencing improvement in PMT for conduct problems. Findings underscore the importance of a positive parent-child relationship but reveal limited consistency across studies. Study 2 investigates specific predictors and moderators in PMT and CPS for ODD treatment, such as initial problem severity, inconsistent discipline, and parental attributions. Parental attributions moderated treatment outcomes, with CPS yielding better results when parents had high child-responsible attributions. Study 3 uses longitudinal mediation analysis to assess lagging skills, inconsistent discipline, and parental attributions as mediators of behavioural improvement. Inconsistent discipline significantly mediated changes in disruptive behaviours, underscoring the complexity of treatment mechanisms. Collectively, this thesis provides insights into factors impacting treatment efficacy for ODD, highlighting pathways through which PMT and CPS may yield beneficial outcomes.
