Integrating Training Load Metrics with Player Development Pathways in High-Performance Youth Basketball

High-performance youth basketball academies operate within structured athlete development pathways that bridge secondary education and senior professional or collegiate competition. Within these environments, athletes undertake intensive schedules combining on-court training, strength and conditioning, and academic commitments. Managing these demands requires systematic monitoring of training load (TL) to support athlete development, manage fatigue, and ensure training stimuli align with developmental objectives. Although TL monitoring is widely used in professional sport, its longitudinal application and integration within coaching practice in youth basketball academies remain underexamined. Accordingly, the aim of this thesis was to investigate how TL monitoring can be integrated into player development pathways and coaching practices within a high-performance youth basketball academy. This thesis comprises four interconnected studies examining internal and external TL patterns, coaching perspectives on monitoring, and the alignment between intended and delivered training stimuli. Study 1 quantified longitudinal patterns of internal TL and training exposure across training years, academic terms, and playing positions using session rating of perceived exertion (sRPE). Linear mixed-effects models revealed significantly greater internal TL and training exposure in later academic terms and increases between the first and subsequent years of the program, indicating progressive training demands across the development pathway. Study 2 described season-long external TL using inertial measurement unit data. External TL demonstrated clear term-based variation and positional differences, with backcourt players performing greater relative movement demands than frontcourt players. Study 3 explored coaches’ philosophies and perspectives on athlete development and TL monitoring through semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis. Coaches emphasised holistic athlete development integrating technical, tactical, psychological, and physical domains. Monitoring was valued when it supported communication, recovery management, and training planning; however, coaches expressed resistance to complex metrics perceived as detached from coaching practice. Study 4 evaluated the alignment between coach-prescribed Individual Development Goals (IDGs) and drill-level external TL using multinomial logistic regression. External TL variables, including high-intensity decelerations, vertical PlayerLoad, and high-speed running distance, were associated with specific goal categories, with models classifying drill objectives with moderate accuracy (66%). Collectively, these findings provide longitudinal reference data for internal and external TL within a high-performance youth basketball academy and highlight contextual factors influencing monitoring adoption and interpretation. TL monitoring is most effective when embedded within coaching workflows and aligned with clearly defined developmental objectives. Integrating monitoring with coaching intent provides a framework for evaluating training design and ensuring practice stimuli reflect intended developmental outcomes within youth athlete development pathways.
