The redistribution of species, facilitated by climate change, is causing the tropicalisation of marine habitats, as tropical species adapt to novel temperate ecosystems resulting in spatial and temporal ecological changes. This thesis focuses on the physiology and behaviour of a tropical schooling fish, Abudefduf vaigiensis, and how they are influenced by extrinsic factors namely latitude, water temperature and shoaling interactions in novel temperate ecosystems. Overall, there was clear evidence of physiological and behavioural plasticity in A. vaigiensis populations in single and mixed-species shoals along a latitudinal gradient within their geographical range, with trade-offs regarding foraging efficiency and predator avoidance as the predominant factors in mitigating cooler water temperatures and novel predators.
