In the discourse on documentary ethics, scholars tend to focus on the ethics encoded in the aesthetic and textual elements of the completed film. However, many ethical issues that filmmakers' experience in documentary filmmaking may not be visible in the finished film, thus there is a need to engage differently in the study of documentary ethics. By examining the motivation, production and editing processes of the documentary Obey the Law and You Won't Go to Jail (aka The Food Terrorists) via a practice-led research approach, I explore ethical problems that are often hidden in the documentary film text. This exegesis also considers whether a professionally binding code of ethics for filmmakers would secure or diminish the qualities essential to the making of a documentary film.
