Acknowledging the enormous, yet largely unrecognised potential of meetings and business events, the “Beyond Tourism Benefits: Building an International Profile” study was commissioned by the Future Convention Cities Initiative (FCCI). The study extends two important pieces of research conducted by Foley, Schlenker, Edwards and Lewis-Smith (2013) and Edwards, Foley and Schlenker (2012). The earlier findings identified that the contributions delivered by international conferences held in Sydney, Australia (2008-2012) extend well beyond the tourism spend. Conferences support knowledge expansion, relationship development, and research collaboration. They attract global talent and showcase local talent, set research agendas and contribute to local and global health and well-being. A rigorous methodology produced the findings that are presented in this report and represent the first time that such a study has been replicated internationally. The study is based on a survey of 12 international conferences held in Seoul, Sydney, Durban and Toronto. Until now, the scholarship of business events has focused mainly on the economic contribution of a conference as a means of determining its legacy. Importantly this study recasts that focus by acknowledging the significant effort that associations, academics, and practitioners exert to realise wider industry and societal benefits. |
