The plot revolves around two estranged sisters, Desda, who has lived in Alice Springs with her mother, and Fiona who has grown up on Sydney’s beaches with her father. Shortly after Fiona’s arrival in Alice Springs, Desda takes her sister into the desert, ostensibly for a camping trip, then drives off and leaves her there, with only basic supplies and a brief note saying she will return for her in ten days time.
The novel explores their different experiences of ‘country’, in both the literal and abstract sense, with excerpts from their recently deceased mother’s memoir and stories of the Western Desert woven into the narrative.
