This paper is the first of two. It describes an evaluation of the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN) that was conducted in 2003. The fundamental aim of the study was to identify the role of ACORN and determine if it was perceived by perioperative nurses to be an effective organisation. This paper presents the background to the research and reports the results of the first research question about the role of ACORN.
