We investigate the processes by which competing candidates for institutionalization, or proto-institutions (Lawrence, Hardy & Phillips, 2002) coalesce into shared practices and logics. We identify the institutional work undertaken by leaders competing to promote their preferred institutional arrangements, finding a process of co-creation of institutions involving multiple members of the field who compete and collaborate to develop new institutions.
