Host-plant resistance can play an important part of an integrated pest management system. Potato is generally consider susceptible to the main insect pests of the crop, the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata L.), potato tuber moths (Phthorimaea operculella [Zell.], Tecia solanivora Polovny, Symmetrischema tangolias [Gyen]), and aphids (the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae [Thomas], and the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae [Sulzer]). Two approaches have been used for the development of potato cultivars resistant to those pests; traditional breeding and the transgenic approach. Wild Solanum species are the main source of resistance for breeding insect-resistant potato. Glycoalkaloids, trichomes, and other undefined factors are responsible for the resistance of wild Solanum species to insects. The transgenic approach uses gene from different sources such as the endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis, protease inhibitors, avidin, and lectins.
