dc.description.abstract	In the absence of a university in Sydney prior to 1850, some information on the sciences, rapidly developing in the first half of the 19th century, was made available through the lecture program of the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts (founded in 1833). The lecturers were welleducated members of the community but, prior to the arrival of James Smith Norrie, the first professional chemist in Sydney, they were not extensively educated in chemistry. These lecture series were a feature of Sydney society and represent a first attempt in chemical education but, because there was no systematic approach to the science, may have been of little practical impact.

Abstract:

In the absence of a university in Sydney prior to 1850, some information on the sciences, rapidly developing in the first half of the 19th century, was made available through the lecture program of the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts (founded in 1833).
