For thousands of years indigenous cultures of South America have chewed the leaves of coca plants for the stimulant and local anesthetic properties they afford. These properties are due to the presence of the pharmacologically active alkaloid, cocaine. Today, cocaine is a scheduled substance of abuse and one of the most prevalent recreational drugs in the world with few licit uses as a topical anesthetic. Seized material and biological specimens suspected of containing cocaine are analyzed using a range of techniques to afford a wealth of information relevant in clinical and forensic applications.
