The new psychoactive substances (NPS) are a large and chemically diverse group of compounds that have appeared on the drug market in recent decades as “legal” alternatives that mimic the effects of established and controlled drugs, such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin, and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). With the aid of the internet as a platform to promote and market these compounds, they have become a threat to global health. The large number and evolving nature of NPS that enter the drug market pose significant problems and challenges for consumers, forensic drug analysts and toxicologists, healthcare systems, law enforcement, and drug policy makers.
