Electrochemical energy storage offers a highly effective solution to address the growing energy and environmental challenges. Among the various options, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are prominent due to their impressive performance and cost-effectiveness, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. However, the primary obstacle to improving the performance of LIBs lies in the design and production of suitable electrode materials. Recently, MXenes show great promise as anodes for lithium storage owing to their unique properties such as high electrical conductivity, fast molecule and ion transport, low operating voltages, and impressive capacities. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive overview and detailed discussion of how MXenes can be applied as active materials, conductive additives, or current collectors in LIBs. The smart engineering of MXenes and constructing MXene-based composites have resulted in significant enhancements in the energy density, power density, cycle life, and safety of LIBs. Additionally, we highlight the challenges and opportunities in using MXenes and their composites in LIB systems.
