In this study the phenomenon of surface plasticisation of the polymer poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) was investigated. Plasticisation of PEEK by chloroform, an established plasticiser of the polymer, was studied using a sliding friction technique. This enabled the surface mechanical properties of PEEK to be determined after treatment. The data produced shows that for chloroform treated PEEK a critical load is reached where the rate of increase of frictional work increases dramatically and results in destruction of the sample. The critical load for this system indicates that chloroform causes extensive plasticisation of the PEEK surface. © 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
